About Marcellekes

The name

In Antwerp, we call it a Marcelleke. The rest of the world calls it a wifebeater.

We loved the shirt. We never loved that name. So we kept the Antwerp one, and gave the shirt a better story.

Why it matters

That name was
never a joke.

In the Netherlands, a woman is killed every eight days. Most often by someone who said he loved her. The Femicide Monitor at Leiden University studies how that can be prevented, so women get help sooner.

Let's all be a bit more Marcelleke: kind, human, trying to do good. Making mistakes, leading with empathy and humour, never taking ourselves too seriously. Open to change, and standing up for what's right.

What we do

5

from every Marcelleke goes to research that helps keep women safe. Every year on 25 November, we show you exactly where it went.

The kind man

Calls his mum. Twice. Believes we are all equal, and that life is great. Cares for the people around him. Makes mistakes sometimes, and does his best anyway. Asks how she got home. Cries at films, and hugs back. Loves a good pun. Never uses violence to solve things. Is sexy, a little cheeky, and doesn't take himself too seriously.
